Computers / IT Online Degree Programs

Bachelor's degrees in computer science, information science and management information typically take four years to finish. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), students who choose to enroll in these programs may take courses in computer programming, mathematics, engineering and statistics. Other individuals who are more interested in system design may take classes in networking and database management. With a bachelor's degree in computer or information science in hand, many graduates may be well on their way to becoming company webmasters, telecommunications specialists or computer database administrators, according to the BLS website. For other positions in the computer technology field, however, advanced degrees are necessary. For example, database administrator and network architect positions often require a master's degree in business administration with a specialization in information systems, the BLS notes. Prospective computer scientists will need a Ph.D. in computer engineering, software engineering or information technology to be eligible for employment in the private sector. These Ph.D. programs generally last five years, the BLS adds. Some students who earn a bachelor's degree in computer science, however, may qualify for positions in the federal government.
