A bachelor's degree can be completed at a four-year institution of higher education. Individuals who are pursuing a bachelor's of arts may choose to major in an array of fields in the liberal arts, including history, social studies, law, government, literature, media studies and journalism. Those who are seeking a bachelor's of science may prepare themselves to enter healthcare, science and technology-related fields, including engineering, computer science and biological sciences. They may also choose to pursue higher education paths through medical school or doctoral work in physics and other advanced fields. Business, history and health science are some of the most popular majors for bachelor's candidates. According to the Department of Education Statistics, in the 2007-2008 school year, nearly 335,254 bachelor's degrees in business were conferred in the U.S., along with 167,363 in history and social sciences. Employment prospects and earnings are favorable for graduates of four-year programs. For example, in 2008, approximately 72 percent of adults who held a bachelor's degree or higher were working full-time year-round, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Moreover, attainment of a bachelor's degree is associated with higher median earnings than individuals with high school diplomas alone, the BLS adds.
