The number of individuals pursuing higher education is rising, and one way to ease the financial transition is to seek scholarship opportunities. Candidacy for financial assistance can be based on academics, degree specification, extra-curricular activities and many other qualifications.
For example, B'nai B'rith International has announced this year's winners of the Diverse Minds Youth Writing Challenge, which awards scholarships to high school students for their efforts to raise equality awareness. The Jewish humanitarian organization aims to help stop prejudice by challenging participants to write and illustrate books that explain diversity to elementary school children.
One of this year's top winners was the first-ever submission that was written in both English and Spanish. The top recipients were awarded a $5,000 scholarship each, and the opportunity to have their books published.
Second-place finishers in the competition were given $2,000 each in financial assistance, while third-place winners received $1,000 each.
Established four years ago, the writing challenge furthermore awards $500 stipends to the teachers who helped students complete their books, which allows educators to purchase classroom materials. All of the recipients' schools also receive a $500 grant.
