The healthcare industry will generate more positions than any other occupation over the next eight years - approximately 3.2 million - according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Nurses currently hold about 2.6 million jobs and that number is expected to increase by 22 percent during this time period.

In an effort to recognize nurses who specialize in forensics - professionals whose goal is to help abuse victims - the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) is celebrating Forensic Nurses Week.

During this event, the IAFN will honor those nurses who have helped women, children and men who have experienced emotional or physical trauma. Members of the IAFN from across the country will also write letters to public officials and put up posters to show their appreciation for these professionals.

Eileen Allen, president of the IAFN, said that "nearly 40 percent of people are impacted directly or indirectly by violence or abuse." She added that "there are over 3,000 forensic nurses working around the world to provide the specialized care these victims need."

Students who wish to attend college and specialize in this field will discover that this job can come with a high salary. Payscale.com reports that forensic nurses have the potential to earn more than $78,000 per year.
