The number of students enrolling in or returning to school is on the rise, and one way these individuals can ease the financial transition to higher education is by researching scholarship opportunities. Many organizations nationwide offer annual funding that can assist in paying for tuition, books, housing and other educational expenses.
The Virginia, Maryland and Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives (VMDAEC), which funds financial aid opportunities provided by the Educational Scholarship Foundation, announced the winners of the annual Worth Hudson Scholarships. A total of 27 students who are pursuing higher education and live in areas that are serviced by the VMDAEC were awarded scholarships worth $1,000 each.
Eligible candidates were asked to submit a completed application, three letters of recommendation and a personal statement, the organization's website reports. Students were also asked to provide copies of academic transcripts, letters of acceptance to an accredited school and their most recent electrical bill from their primary residence.
The VMDAEC established this scholarship program in honor of Worth Hudson, the company's first chairman of the scholarship foundation and a former chair on the board of directors for Mecklenberg Electric Cooperative, which is located in Chase City, Virginia.
Since its inception 10 years ago, the scholarship program has awarded a total of $198,500 in financial assistance to 289 students.
