Students who are interested in higher education, but are unsure what career they should consider, can benefit from researching the career trends in several different industries. Many times a year, published reports provide interested individuals with information about job availability, projected employment growth, salaries and other important trends.

Among the top-ranked programs that will have highest employment demand in 2010, healthcare degrees were listed as number one, according to the Challenger, Gray and Christmas human resources survey, quoted by Yahoo Education. Due to the growing aging population, individuals who plan to pursue careers in nursing, physical therapy, pharmacy or as medical technicians will benefit the most from advancing their education in this field of study.

Degrees in healthcare are followed by business, including business administration and administrative support. Currently, individuals who have obtained a post-secondary degree in business administration earn an average starting salary of $45,200 per year.

The news source further reported that the third most valuable degree is in computer science with specializations in technology support and information technology and systems. Students with computer science degrees currently have an average starting salary of $61,205 per year, while information sciences and systems degree holders make about $54,038 during their first year.

Degrees in accounting or finance, engineering and marketing rounded out the top-six education programs with the highest demand for employment.
