Students may find career stability with a bachelor's degree in accounting

Accountants can work in various settings, including healthcare providers' offices, financial services companies, auditing firms or insurance agencies, according to Payscale.com. Some schools are implementing new programs for students who are interested in this profession.

The Kansas City Star reports that Peirce College (PC) recently announced it will now offer a bachelor's degree in accounting. The program is aimed at business students who wish to concentrate on this subject.

Through this degree's coursework, students will acquire analytical skills as well as learn about law and ethics, financial regulations and core principles, all of which they may need to know in order to land a career in accounting, the news provider reports. Other topics that will be covered in the curriculum includes technical issues and key business functions.

The accounting degree will also be offered through Web-based classes. This may be convenient for individuals who must work, but would like to pursue a higher education at the same time. Students will be able to enroll in this program while maintaining their current position.

The curriculum is also geared toward helping individuals seek advancement in their future endeavors. Fred Poellnitz, professor for the business department at PC, told the news source that this degree will "help prepare students to sit for the [certified public accountant] exam in Pennsylvania." According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), individuals who wish to advance their careers and become certified public accountants (CPAs) must pass this required test.

Upon graduation, individuals will be prepared to work for nonprofit organizations, the government and corporate businesses.

This program may be appealing to students who would like to have a high-paying salary that comes with many options to begin a career. For example, individuals who enter the corporate workforce with this degree could lands jobs in legal services or insurance, Payscale.com reports. These professionals have the potential to earn more than $100,000 per year.

Students could also decide to work within nonprofit organizations once they obtain a degree in accounting. There will be several options for these individuals to find a job, such as within youth and social services or education.

Schools may provide similar bachelor's degrees that can enable students to seek employment in a growing industry. The BLS reports that there will be more than 279,000 positions created for accountants over the next eight years.
