Small businesses may help to create more jobs

Small businesses may be a contributing factor in the creation of jobs in the U.S. Now, some professionals are attempting to help these companies gain recognition in an effort to boost the economy.

Kenneth I. Chenault, CEO of American Express, along with Michael R. Bloomberg, major of New York City, will be launching a nationwide program called 'Small Business Saturday.' The goal is to drive consumers to local merchants two days after Thanksgiving.

Chenault said that "by spreading the word about Small Business Saturday, we can help raise awareness about the critical role small businesses play in cities and towns across the country." He added that these companies are "the engine of job creation in the U.S. economy."

Over the past two decades, small businesses have generated approximately 65 percent of new positions throughout the country, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration. High-tech workers accounted for the majority of these employees at 43 percent. This group includes scientists, computer programmers and engineers.

Individuals who wish to work for small companies may want to consider getting a business degree.
