Scholarship opportunities may benefit engineering students

In an effort to boost enrollment in engineering degree programs, national organizations in this industry are launching scholarship programs that will help individuals pay for higher education. By taking advantage of these opportunities, students can lower the cost of tuition, books, housing and laboratory fees.

For example, Northrop Grumman Corporation has announced the award winners of the third annual Engineering Scholarship Program. An international security provider, Northrop Grumman gave two high school students $10,000 each in financial assistance.

Candidates were required to be resident of California, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, New York, Ohio or Utah, and were enrolled full-time in an engineering program at an accredited school, according to the company's website. Eligible students must also have maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher throughout high school, and scored at least 1700 on the SAT exam or 27 on the ACT exam.

Elizabeth Iversen, sector vice president and general manager of the company's Navigation Systems Division, stated that "we are thrilled to support these exceptional students in pursuing their engineering degrees." She added that we believe it is important to reach out into our local communities to support education, especially in the areas of math and science."

During the next eight years, the employment of all engineers is expected to grow by 11 percent, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports.ADNFCR-3211-ID-19852880-ADNFCR
