Public policy degrees may benefit students specializing in sustainability

The evolution of sustainable technology has led many industries nationwide to implement energy efficient initiatives into their businesses. Because of the increasing demand for these advancements, the need for professionals with a background in this field is also rising.

In order to improve access to degrees in this specialization, some schools are launching web-based programs that allow students who need a flexible schedule to advance their education at their own pace. For example, Pennsylvania State University will now offer a online bachelors degree in energy and sustainability policy.

Students who enroll in this program will learn skills in policy making, decision making and communications, and will become equipped with knowledge of energy industry ethics.

Jeffrey R. S. Brownson, assistant professor of energy and mineral engineering at the university, stated that "our goal is to develop students who understand the energy industry and what it will take to transform it into a sustainable structure." He added that "graduates with communication skills, a facility with global business strategies and analysis, and an understanding of the energy industry and sustainability will be in high demand."

Currently, an estimated 3.5 million students are enrolled in an online education course or pursuing a web-based degree, according to the U.S. Distance Learning Association.ADNFCR-3211-ID-19895546-ADNFCR
