According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there will be an 8 percent increase in jobs for financial managers over the next eight years. These professionals also have the potential to earn a high salary of more than $135,000 per year.

Individuals who are interested in similar occupations will find that there are programs available to help them enhance their skills after they have entered the workforce. For instance, the University of Maryland and the Maryland Bankers Association are combining their efforts to create a Bank Director Training Program (BDTP).

Clifford Rossi, director of the BDTP, said that "as we're emerging from the financial crisis, there is no better time for a formal program for community bank board members."

This course of study is designed to give participants financial skills as well as a better understanding of how to work more effectively with their respective organizations to address complex issues. Topics that will be covered include deposit insurance, corporate governance, capital management, strategic planning and asset liability.

The BDTP will be aimed at business leaders who serve on the board of community banks and will begin next year. Professionals, including financial managers, may benefit from similar programs.
