Similarly to many career paths, entering the workforce as an artist requires a combination of both traditional and technical skills. In addition to the use of watercolors and sculpting clay, the art degree now includes more innovative techniques, such as graphic design.
In an effort to recognize students specializing in this field, some schools are launching competitions that challenge these individuals to display their young talent. For example, the winners of this year's Poster Design Competition were recently announced.
Established by The Art Institutes and Americans for the Arts, this program awards full scholarships for various schools nationwide to college-bound individuals interested in advancing their education through graphic design. This year's theme was Life is Better With Art In It, which required submissions to depict entertainment, spontaneity and beauty.
John Mazzoni, president of The Arts Institutes, stated that "the winners of this year's competition are incredibly talented, and we are delighted that they will now have the opportunity to hone their skills by pursuing a creative arts education." He added that "we are confident that with the proper training and education, they will go on to fulfilling and meaningful careers in the arts."
Government statistics predict that during the next eight years, the employment of graphic designers is projected to grow by 13 percent, and that demand will create approximately 36,900 new jobs.
