To improve the number of educational opportunities for individuals who wish to work in multicultural environments, more schools are launching degree programs that teach students the skills needed for success in this field.
The Middle States Commission on Higher Education has approved the establishment on an online degree program specializing in multicultural education at the Eastern University (EU) Loeb School of Education. This new opportunity will benefit future degree holders who wish to include the study of different languages as part of their education and be able to take advantage of the flexibility that an online degree offers.
Students who enroll in this program will become certified to provide English instruction to non-native speakers at all teaching levels, and learn how to apply curricula and methodologies to these teaching environments. They will also learn skills that can help them decide the best teaching strategies for students of many different cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
"We are excited about offering the online program to those who have a passion to teach English to speakers of other languages in the U.S. and around the world," said Heewon Chang, chair of graduate education at EU. He added that "students from diverse cultural and language backgrounds will work and learn from each other."
Government statistics suggest that by 2018, the employment of literacy educators is expected to grow by 15 percent, a trend that will create approximately 14,500 new jobs.
