As a result of the growing competitiveness in many job markets, a number of people who have already started their careers are returning to school to enhance their professional value. In an effort to assist these individuals, some academic institutions have launched degree programs and financial assistance opportunities for these nontraditional students.
For instance, Western Governors University (WGU) has launched the WGU Information Technology Professionals Scholarship program, which will benefit employees in this field . A total of 20 recipients will be awarded $600 each in financial assistance, which is renewable for up to five semesters.
Qualified individuals include those who have already earned some credit hours towards a web-based degree, and have obtained two or more information technology (IT) certificates. Enrollees can pursue several specializations through the bachelors IT degree program, including network administration, network design and management, databases, security and software.
WGU will also award scholarships to students pursuing undergraduate studies in health informatics, offered by the school's health profession department, and information technology management, which is overseen by the school's college of business.
Individuals who have begun their careers and are advancing their skills through earning a postsecondary degree may be qualified for high-paying jobs. For example, in 2008 computer application software engineers earned annual salaries ranging from $53,720 to $128,870, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
