Among today's prospective students, many don't want to, or cannot, be tied down to a desk in a classroom in order to earn a degree. Online education allows them to go to school and still have the freedom to live a lifestyle that includes hectic job schedules, soccer practices and family dinners.
Distance learning allows flexibility to complete an education at whatever pace is needed and gives future degree holders access to class materials and professors all the time. Non-traditional students also have the ability to pursue the same programs that are available on campus, ranging from bachelors degrees to masters degrees.
A provider of online education, Drexel University, has announced that students can earn a graduate certificate in Sustainability and Green Construction, which focuses on eco-friendly aspects in construction and the concepts of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green building rating system. Future degree holders gain skills needed to improve the balance between the natural environment and the demands of the architectural, engineering and construction community.
Online universities may be particularly attractive to adults who would like to acquire new skills but do not have the time to do so in a conventional setting. Today, nearly 4 million students are taking online courses and earning online college degrees.
