Current education professionals who want to earn an advanced degree can benefit from enrolling in online courses. Distance learning benefits especially nontraditional students who want to continue working while pursue higher education.

For example, American Public University recently announced a new online summer course that will benefit fourth- through12th grade educators who teach history, called The Prelude to War: 1859-1861, according to the Frederick News Post. Those who enroll in this class will also participate in a three-day workshop during the weekend of July 17 held in one of the nation's most historic parks, Harpers Ferry, in West Virginia.

Students will learn about the various events that led to the beginning of the American Civil War, the news source reports.

The three-credit course begins on July 5 and continues through the end of of August.

The online education sector grew 17 percent in 2009 and had been growing at about 20 percent in previous years. Nearly one in four U.S. students take at least some college courses online, up from one in 10 in 2002, Reuters reports.ADNFCR-3211-ID-19779800-ADNFCR
