New school may expand options for those interested in sustainable careers

Careers in sustainability are growing in availability all across the country, and many schools are creating relevant degree programs in an effort to keep up with the high employment demand. Advanced degree in green technology can be used in a variety of fields including business, engineering, criminal justice and architecture.

Among these academic institutions, the Ecotech Institute was launched last week, becoming the first school to offer all degree programs geared towards careers in renewable energy and sustainability design. The school plans to offer prospective students seven associates degrees and one certificate program that will teach them skills needed for employment in environmentally friendly industries.

The associates of applied science degrees offered at Ecotech Institute include electrical engineering technology, energy and environmental paralegal, energy efficiency, environmental technology, renewable energy technology, solar energy and wind energy technology. Students can also become certified in sustainable interior design.

Tom Moore, president and chief executive officer of Education Corporation of America, stated that "the time has come for a higher education institution that is 100 percent focused on preparing Americans for green collar jobs, not merely a department or program inside of an institution."

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of environmental engineers in expected to grow by 31 percent in the next eight years.ADNFCR-3211-ID-19743291-ADNFCR
