National healthcare organization awards scholarships to successful medical students

In an effort to recognize academically successful students who are pursuing health-related careers, some national organizations have created scholarships programs for these individuals. As a result of receiving financial assistance through one of these opportunities, future medical professionals will be able to lower the cost their education.

The American Medical Association (AMA) Foundation recently announced the winners of its annual Physicians of Tomorrow Scholarship program, which awarded 24 medical students $10,000 each in financial assistance. Winners were nominated by school faculty and selected based on academic achievement, community service involvement, letters of recommendation, personal statement and need for financial assistance.

In addition to the foundation-sponsored financial assistance opportunity, this program features three other scholarship initiatives. Those who received the Dr Lin and Minta Hill Alexander scholarships were selected based on their enrollment at an Oklahoma-based medical academic institution.

The third opportunity is funded by the Audio-Digest Foundation and honors students who support the communication of science, which includes mentoring and educating. The fourth program is also sponsored by the Johnson M. Hammond, MD and given to students who study medical journalism.

Barney Maynard, president of the foundation, stated that honorees possess "outstanding academic achievements, but they have also made the commitment to improve public health through volunteer activities, research and leadership roles in their communities." He added that these scholarships provide recipients with "financial relief and encouragement to attain their professional goals."ADNFCR-3211-ID-19925724-ADNFCR
