Due to the increase in the aging population in the U.S., there is a rising demand for students earning medical degrees. In order to keep up with the need for these professionals, more schools are getting approvals to offer a variety of higher education opportunities in this field of study.
For example, the North Shore-LIJ Health System has announced that Hofstra University in New York has met all requirements to launch its School of Medicine, which will begin accepting students at the beginning of July. The establishment of the new medical school is the first in the state in more than 45 years.
A $12.5 million grant donated by the state helped fund the remodeling of a building that previously housed the New York Jets administrative office and training facilities. Classrooms, laboratories and a 100-person lecture hall were among the renovations to the center.
"Our goal is to enhance all our academic programs and research opportunities in the sciences," said Stuart Rabinowitz, president of the school. He added that "the School of Medicine will lead the way and partner with the other schools and colleges at Hofstra and with our community to create integrated, interdisciplinary programs that benefit all students."
Government statistics suggest that the employment of all healthcare professionals is expected to grow by 22.5 percent during the next eight years.
