Law enforcement professionals may benefit from new programs

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), there are numerous occupations in the law enforcement field, including police and sheriff's patrol officers as well as detectives. Many individuals already working in this industry may find that new degree programs could help them advance their careers.

Many schools offer campus and Web-based courses that can enable individuals who are already working, or raising a family, to further their education and experience.

For instance, Ashford University recently partnered with the National Sheriffs' Association (NSA) to offer such a program for students who already hold jobs in law enforcement. NSA members can take credit-granting classes that may be applied to a degree program. Jane McAuliffe, the school's president and chief executive officer, says that these types of programs are "an ideal option for working adults who are looking to further their education."

NSA members who enroll to take these courses will find several benefits. They might qualify for fee waivers or a discount on their tuition. These individuals may also be allowed to put previously earned credits toward their new degree.

Law enforcement degree holders could also earn high salaries, as the BLS reports in 2008 the average pay for detective supervisors was $75,490 per year.
