Students who are enrolled in aviation science degree programs, and are interested in enhancing their education outside the classroom, can benefit from participating in summer field programs. By taking advantage of these opportunities, future degree holders could learn skills that may not be covered in their campus-based curriculum.
A total of six high school students have been selected by the Global Hawk program to attend the Oshkosh Summer Aviation Camps. This campaign, which is sponsored by Northrop Grumman, chooses individuals based on their interest in this field and their enrollment in accredited postsecondary programs.
Attendees had the opportunity to take a tour of a full-scale replica of the U.S. Air Force RQ-4 Global Hawk, which featured technology that was developed by more than 240 companies nationwide. These aircraft have been used to combat forest fires in California, contribute to NASA environmental studies and track hurricane movements along the gulf coast.
Over the next eight years, the employment of aircraft and avionics equipment technicians is expected to grow by 7 percent, and an estimated 9,800 new jobs will be created across the country, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
