Increased funding for computer science scholarships may improve female student enrollment

In order to encourage female students to enroll in degree programs in which they are underrepresented, such as computer science, some businesses are launching scholarship programs that are specifically for women.

Wipro Technologies, an international services company, has announced that it will provide funding for a scholarship program launched by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). This financial assistance will allow female students pursuing degrees in computer science the opportunity to attend global conferences.

Each year, 20 students are named ACM Council on Women in Computing (ACM-W)/Wipro scholars, and awarded scholarships ranging from $600 to $1,200 each. Because of the increase in financial support this year by Wipro, ACM-W was able to offer the most scholarships since the program was launched.

I. Vijayakumar, chief technology officer of Wipro, stated that "we are pleased to sponsor this ACM-W Scholarship Program, and in general to bring more women into science and technology, and to create better real-world solutions to complex issues that make a difference in improving living standards around the globe."

By 2018, the employment of computer and information scientists is expected to grow by 24 percent, and the demand will create approximately 7,000 new jobs nationwide, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.ADNFCR-3211-ID-19869012-ADNFCR
