
Similar to other professions, becoming an artist requires students who are enrolled in related degree programs to learn both traditional and innovative skills in order to be successful in this industry. In addition to using to sketch pads and watercolors, art education includes more technologically advanced techniques, such as graphic design.
In an effort to improve the availability of affordable offerings in this specialization, Central Arizona College (CAC) will now offer an associate's degree in graphic design. By launching this new offering, the school is helping meet the need for these professionals, as government statistics suggest that by 2018, a total of 36,900 new graphic design jobs will be created nationwide.
Curriculum will be taught through art-related software programs, including Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Dreamweaver, according to The Coolidge Examiner. Coursework will include graphic design, art history, small business administration, introduction to mass communication, web design and layout as well as digital photograph and photoshop.
Enrollees will also have the chance to use their skills outside the classroom, as students can join the school's Art Club or submit contributions the CACtus campus newspaper, then media source reports.
Students who complete related degree programs in graphic design may be qualified for high-paying careers. In 2008, these professionals earned annual salaries ranging from $26,110 to $74,660, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
