The trend of using renewable energy is growing across the country, and those who have obtained associate, bachelors or masters degree in environmental or sustainable management may find many new job opportunities.

Ken Salazar, U.S. interior secretary, officially approved the nation's first offshore wind farm, which will be located off the coast of Massachusetts in the Nantucket Sound, according to CNN. Cape Wind, the project that has been under discussion for more than nine years, will build 130 turbines in that area.

The project is estimated to create hundreds of jobs and provide Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket with more than 75 percent of the power needed, the news source reports.

"The U.S. is leading a clean energy revolution that is reshaping our future," Salazar told the news source. He added that "Cape Wind is an opening of a new chapter in that future, and we are all part of that history."

Employment of environmental engineers is projected to grow by 31 percent in the next eight years, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In 2008, these professionals earned annual wages of $74,020.
