Pursuing a degree in the medical field can be challenging, but earning it can lead to a variety of benefits, including receiving national and international recognition for professional success.
ATHENA International, an organization that helps fund programs that honor women in medical professions, has announced Mula Muleta as the recipient of this year's Global ATHENA Leadership Award. Women who receive this recognition are honored for their contributions to health services that help disadvantaged communities improve the quality of life for its residents.
As a senior medical advisor for Women and Health Alliance International, Muleta has led the nonprofit organization's efforts to improve international medical care for women in underprivileged regions. Specifically, she has helped launch health programs in Ethopia that provide care for women who are suffering from post-partum depression , and her efforts contributed to improving the availability of reproductive, maternal and neonatal care.
Earlier in her career, Muleta worked with the Ethiopian Ministry of Health, the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital and the United Nations Population Fund.
Dianne Dinkel, president and CEO of ATHENA International, stated that "it is such an honor to recognize Dr Muleta as the 2010 Global ATHENA Leadership Award recipient." She added that "we were inspired by her story and the stories of the thousands of fistula patients that she has helped."
