Federal grants allow schools to launch more postsecondary programs

In an effort to make themselves more appealing in many job industries, many people have returned to school to advanced their skills and improve their professional value. One way more educational opportunities are being launched to meet the needs of the growing student population, organizations are donating funding to schools, which are used to launch more degree programs.

For example, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recently gave a two-year grant worth $422,528 to the Newman Real Estate Institute at Baruch College in New York. This funding will help the school create a new web-based certificate program that will benefit building operators as well as property and portfolio asset managers.

Students who enroll in the Benchmark Green certificate program will need to complete 15 credits, which include courses in energy efficiency management and improvement, advanced energy technologies as well as building system synergies and integrations. After becoming certified, individuals will be equipped with the skills needed to make building more sustainable.

Stan Altman, president of the school, stated that "the Newman Institute at Baruch College has long been an advocate for sustainable buildings and building management and has a wealth of knowledge and resources to apply to the launch of the Benchmark Green certificate program."

By 2018, the employment of property managers is projected to grow by 8 percent, and approximately 25,600 new jobs will be created, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports.ADNFCR-3211-ID-19888683-ADNFCR
