Earning an MBA degree may lead to career in sports management

Students who are earning a business degree and want to incorporate their passion for athletics into their future career can benefit from specializing in sports management. By advancing their education in this field of study, future degree holders have the opportunity to work with sports teams on a national and international level.

For example, a total of 33 students enrolled in the sports MBA program at San Diego State University will be traveling to the Dominican Republic and working with the San Diego Padres, a U.S. major league baseball team. During the nine-day trip, participants will see how the organization runs their community outreach initiatives in that country, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Students will also learn first-hand how a professional sports team works outside the U.S., including recruitment and partnerships with teams in the Dominican Republic.

Scott Minto, director of the school's sports MBA program, told the news source that "the Dominican Republic serves as a microcosm of this, and the Padres are leading the way in utilizing baseball as a point of entry with a community." He added that "our students will learn corporate social responsibility and community development through sports in the best way: first hand."

In 2008, the average annual salaries of MBA degree holders ranged from $73,510 to $171,583, depending on the field, position and years of experience.ADNFCR-3211-ID-19849640-ADNFCR
