College degree programs prepare students to address environmental policy issues

As the green movement continues to expand, many companies and organizations are looking for new ways to make the environment a healthier place to live, according to the U.S. Energy Protection Agency. These initiatives could lead to more jobs for individuals who wish to obtain a degree that allows them to study environmental and political issues.

Washington University is one school that is offering similar courses of study, as administrators recently announced the launch of a three new majors in its environmental studies program, according to Student Life newspaper.

The new curriculum allows students to choose a main focus in either biology, earth sciences or social sciences while enabling them to gain knowledge in several aspects of the environment. The program is intended to create a vast amount of opportunities for individuals in these fields, including the political science industry.

William Lowry, an associate professor at the school, tells the newspaper that integrating environmental courses with governmental studies allows students "to study human interactions with the environment."

Similar programs at other schools may appeal to students who are interested in this field and who wish to become political scientists or sociologists. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that job opportunities for these individuals will increase by 21 percent over the next eight years.
