While the 'green movement' is continuing to gain popularity, the fastest growing sector of the electric power industry is renewable energy resources, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Engineers who are working in wind power could earn more than $90,000 per year.
Some organizations have partnered to help businesses increase their access to renewable energy resources. One example is the North Carolina Rural Economic Development Center (NCRED) and the Institute for Sustainable Development (ISD), which recently announced the launch of their Green Plus program.
Chris Carmody, executive director of ISD, said that it is important to know that "green practices can save and create jobs in rural America."
The joint effort will award 25 scholarships to small, rural businesses in North Carolina, so that these companies can participate in the program. Organizations will be provided with the opportunity to learn about ways to improve their sustainability practices and save money through Green Plus.
The program will also award $25,000 loans to participating businesses who meet eligibility requirements. The companies are expected to use the funds toward implementing new sustainable energy and environmentally safe workplaces and may also make additions to their respective organizations.
While positions in the business industry increase due to the going 'green' movement, there may also be more job opportunities in sustainable energy. The BLS reports that careers in geothermal and solar power are also expected to continually expand, so students may want to consider obtaining a degree that pertains to these fields.
