Prospective students who want to pursue an associate, bachelors or masters degree in environmental or sustainable engineering may find more job opportunities as companies and businesses are renovating their facilities and making them more eco-friendly.
The American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) announced The Resort at Isla Palenque as the recipient of the Honor Award in the analysis and planning category for its environmentally responsible master plan. Assisting the resort in its sustainability plan were Amble Resorts, Isla Panlenque's developer and Design Workshop, a landscaping architecture and planning firm.
The design includes the use of the terrain and specific building locations that will be enhanced by the island's natural surroundings. The locations of new buildings are also in areas that had previously been cleared for farming, which prevents the construction from destroying ecosystems and land on the island.
Richard Shaw, a partner at Design Workshop, stated that "the idea behind the master plan has always been to retain natural resources while accommodating low-density development; synthesizing aspects of sustainability, conservation and ecotourism for a result that will really create unprecedented character."
From 1998 to 2007, green-collar jobs grew by more than 9 percent, which was twice the growth for all other traditional jobs.
