Academic workshop leads to improvements in homeland security education

As the U.S. continues to work towards improving homeland security, the need for professionals with a background in this field is rising. In order to meet this demand and better prepare students in related degree programs for their future careers, academic officials meet annually to discuss academic offerings.

The Center for Homeland Defense and Security is currently hosting a national workshop that benefits postsecondary faculty from affiliated universities and colleges nationwide. Discussion topics include comparative homeland security, national defense technology, industry- related interdisciplinary techniques and homeland security leadership skills.

At the event, attendees compare analyze industry challenges and find ways to incorporate solutions into these degree programs. By taking advantage of this opportunity, academic officials can return to their campuses with ideas for improving this course of study at the undergraduate and graduate level.

For instance, through the workshop, Central Pennsylvania College was approved to launch a web-based degree program in homeland security management. The school now offers a total of 12 degree programs and three certifications via online education.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Department of Homeland Security employees can work in a variety of areas, including customs and border protection, immigration and customs enforcement as well as the U.S. Secret Service.ADNFCR-3211-ID-19925036-ADNFCR
