Academic restructuring provides students with specific educational opportunities

In an effort to provide individuals with a more in-depth focus on their particular area of study, some schools are restructuring their academic programs. For instance, Wentworth Institute of Technology recently announced that it will organize its existing curricula into five colleges. These schools will focus on design and architecture, management and construction, arts and sciences, engineering and technology as well as continuing education.

The school's reorganization is intended to address the need for multi-disciplinary and project-based curricula among students. Overall, Wentworth hopes to increase educational opportunities for enrollees by providing academic leadership at each particular college.

Russell Pinizotto, vice president of academic affairs and provost at the school, said that "these moves [will] help position [the institution] for the addition of new programs that will fall under more clearly defined colleges." He added that they will provide students with greater opportunities in a more efficient manner.

The restructuring is expected to be a multi-year process that includes new designs, descriptions, planning and implementation for the curricula, and will begin early next year.

Similar initiatives may allow students to focus on obtaining a degree that could lead them to an engineering career. There will be approximately 178,300 new jobs for these professionals over the next eight years, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
